Monday's Show Notes-2/25/08

***Another event gone from the State Fairgrounds - that is $500,000 in city revenue gone in 10 days time.  Blago doesn't care and we haven't heard a peep from the Gov's favorite mayor, Davlin.  Guess the city isn't in a budget crunch...

***Why is it so difficult for big media to not look beyond the end of their pointy little noses?  Another Chicago columnist bemoans the lack for 'real' gun control after the NIU shooting and berates Rep. Aaron Schock for saying concealed carry might be a better alternative.  Mr. Hinz believes that if individuals can't own guns, crazy people wouldn't get guns or shoot people.

After another mass shooting at another college campus, this time in nearby DeKalb, it's tempting to write a column asking when America will wake up and ban most private possession of firearms. I still wonder about that. It is inarguable that some wacko can't shoot up a classroom full of kids if the wacko doesn't have a gun or three to shoot with.

Of course, in Chicago and a couple of surrounding suburbs, one cannot own a firearm legally because of unconstitutional ordinances.  And, we all know there hasn't been one shooting by an armed criminal or crazy person since those ordinances passed.

***A report published in the Chicago Tribune notes that about 50% of freshman in Chicago Public Schools never graduate.  It says:

Nearly half of Chicago public school 9th graders who started high school in the last seven years have dropped out without earning a high school diploma, according to a study to be released Monday.  The report, CPS Graduation Pathways Strategy and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, analyzed the district's dropout numbers since 2000.  It found that the number of students who did not finish high school hit a high in 2000, when 49 percent of freshmen who started their studies in 1995 did not graduate.

But then, thankfully, the Sun-Times editorializes that CPS is moving just too, darn quickly in attempting to right this sinking ship.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Board of Education will vote on Duncan's latest, massive round of 19 proposed closures and overhauls. This plan, announced just a month ago, is far too ambitious and rushed for a fair vote Wednesday. Delaying the vote a month won't hurt anyone and will, we hope, give CPS a better chance to get it right.

How many more kids have to fail before CPS stops listening to the powerful teachers' union, the liberal media and all the other do-gooders?
