Bankrupting Govt.

***The Sun-Times FINALLY picks up on why governments of all sizes, but particularly munis, are suffering from bloated budgets - unions.  The editorial states what has been obvious to anyone watching the US business sector for the last 3 decades.  Union salaries and pensions have driven companies overseas, reduced headcount, increased computerization - anything to cut union employees who ask for more year-in and year-out.  Chicago, Springfield and the State of Illinois are realizing that their budgets are driven by these employees.  Union membership is declining in all sectors except government.  Government jobs are the last bastion of union growth and vehement membership.

When will the taxpayers wake up?

***This is a problem with the Olympics.  Should Chicago really compete for 2016, this is the article the entire organizing committee should read.

***Mad Magazine, an all-time favorite, spoofs the Prez candidates.

***Shifting voter  registration, says the NYT.  This 'shift' though could be the fact that Dems have been out of the White House for 8 years and have worked harder than the GOP to get people registered to vote.

***Brooks has an interesting column about The Obama in the NYT.

***Pelosi is now good with drilling for any of her Dems who are running in a contested race.  Nothing like standing by your principles.

***The fence is getting built.  Of course, people still think it is 'controversial'.  Keep building.

***Kurt Erickson's column in the Post Dispatch about the State Fair:  You know its fair time when former Attorney General Roland Burris shows up in town wearing a cowboy hat. It wouldn't be the state fair without some politicians wandering around looking slightly uncomfortable. One fond memory is seeing House Speaker Michael Madigan being told by his spokesman Steve Brown to wipe a dab of hot dog mustard off his cheek.
