House on Wheels

***Has nobody ever moved a house before?  The Maisenbacher house, which is barely connected to Lincoln lore by the thinnest of threads, was rescued from the Springfield Clinic wrecking ball by people with hearts bigger than their heads.  Turns out that the move, laying the foundation and rehabbing the house is going to cost WAAAAAAYYYYYY more than anyone imagined.

This from the Davlin Administration:  In an interview Wednesday, Farmer said figures in the letter are just estimates. No one knows what the total cost will be or exactly how the city’s $822,000 would be spent, he said. Faced with a deadline from Springfield Clinic to move the house or see it torn down, he said, the city and the Conns went ahead.

“There’s simply no way to know the actual cost,” Farmer said. “We’ve been sailing in uncharted waters for some time now.”

Uncharted waters?  Really?  Did anyone with the City or with the purchaser ever think about doing some due diligence?  How about thinking about what the foundation was going to cost and getting that done first?  How about coming up with a plan before they agreed to the move?

This is so typical Springfield...

***The County Public Health Department comes down hard on bars that allow smoking.  Fine.  It's the law.  The owners should go along with the law.  But if they get busted they should also have their day in court.  They should have full due process.  Additionally, why is it that the smoker isn't fined?  Finally, Jim Stone and his inspectors should grow a thicker skin if they're going to do undercover investigations in bars.  They should be prepared for people bitching about this impingement on their livlihood.

***Chicago gets the NYT treatment.  Shockingly enough, The Obama's sheen has rubbed off on Chicago and there is hardly a mention of the corruption that runs Chicago.

***Take a look at Al Gore today.  He now warns that the environmental crisis could lead to the collapse of civilization based on some modeling done about the collapse of the Mayas.  Part of the discussion revolves around how the Maya may also have experienced an environmental crisis.

Wait a minute.  If there has been environmental crisis before the industrial age, is it possible, just posible, that the environment is cyclical and NOTHING man does affects it at all?!?!?
